    Agonal Lust – Unabridged Suffering

Agonal Lust lives in the space where desire refuses to die—where longing persists even at the edge of exhaustion, collapse, or loss, proving that wanting is sometimes stronger than survival itself.

Unabridged Suffering arrives as a raw, visceral statement from Agonal Lust, presented via New York’s Hospital Productions. It is the final testament to the uncompromising energy of power electronics harnessed by duo James Light and Jamie VanBlake aka Ronald Ester. Originally conceived with lyrics and compositions by James Light and Ronald Elster, the project’s completion was marked by Elster’s untimely passing—an absence that imbues the album with a haunting, unresolved energy. The intention of this album is to be the final full length album from the relatively short lived, though influential project with over 15 releases. Vocals were later finished by Sal Scarpulla (of Mangled Clit) in New York, adding an extra layer of intense performance to the completed work. James performed the final Agonal Lust set in 2024 at the NWN!/Hospital Festival in Osaka in memorial of Elster whose unfortunate passing happened before the event. Featured was collaborator Prurient, head of Hospital Productions whom have produced several releases post Elster‘s death. While these remain the last completed “sessions” with Elster, when asked James if he would now finally be putting the project to rest, he replied, “Never say never, (though) that was it’s intention – I’ve never been one to completely walk away from anything”.

Musically, the album propels listeners through a tightly wound sequence of abrasive textures and visceral noise, where high-gain electronics and fractured rhythmic elements collide without mercy. Tracks such as “Razors And Gauze”, “Agony Fetish”, and the title piece present rugged, merciless soundscapes that feel improvised yet deeply purposeful, trading conventional structure for raw physicality and psychological impact. The production is immediate and unvarnished, making each track feel claustrophobic, with distortion and feedback acting less as effects than as expressive voices in their own right. Audio samples featuring dialogue surrounding pain and death accompany the sounds organically, in proper form.

Unabridged Suffering lives up to its title, feeling like a sonic excavation of pain and extremity. Comfortably sitting within the PE and industrial traditions that Hospital Productions is known for, yet it wears this heritage with a personal edge. Textures feel corporeal and immediate, like feedback snarling against cracked circuitry or tortured voice fragments trying to surface from beneath the distortion. There’s an almost ritualistic quality in how the album oscillates between brutal clatter and drawn‑out electronic pressure.

The aesthetic—described as a “dried‑blood X‑acto blade journey of self‑demise”—reflects a commitment to unsettling the listener both emotionally and aurally. Rather than offering comfort or release, the release demands engagement with discomfort and endurance of intensity, making it a powerful, if challenging, piece of underground art. James Light continues to produce music at a prolific rate that acts as a kind of therapy while maintaining the memorable times he had with his previous bandmate and chosen family. Meatpacker, Driller, Coldship Passage, Detonation Day and Wounded Son are just some of the alias’ that James graces the Hospital Productions catalog with.

A long-time contributor and pivotal supporter of Discipline Mag, Matthew Samways is a vital node in the experimental underground. Now based in Montréal, his deep immersion began at sixteen when he founded Electric Voice Records (collaborating with Genesis P-Orridge, Ike Yard), later launching the Flesh Prison imprint. Few are as committed to the industrial/noise soundworld as Matthew. He releases music under the alias MITH-XX. https://mith-xx.bandcamp.com/ @mithxx.xx
