Emerging from Düsseldorf’s vibrant Salon des Amateurs scene, German duo Sequence Of Events have announced their forthcoming album The Art of Memory with the release of lead single ‘Meagre Gardens’ – a mesmerising journey through electronic landscapes that defies easy categorisation.

Deniz Saridas and Joshua Gottmanns, the self-taught musicians behind Sequence Of Events, have crafted a sonic tapestry that weaves together the post-industrial heritage of West Germany with contemporary electronic experimentation. Their approach to music-making exists at the intersection of krautrock, shoegaze, industrial, and psychedelia – not as separate influences but as an organic chemical reaction.

“We don’t consciously break down or combine genres,” the band explains. “Everything is interwoven, like chemistry. Some reactions happen immediately, others take years under pressure.”

This chemistry is particularly evident in ‘Meagre Gardens,’ the newly released single that serves as our first glimpse into ‘The Art of Memory.’ The track is a captivating blend of seemingly disparate elements – rolling electronic beats that nod to both krautrock and hip-hop traditions, processed vocals that hover between whisper and chant, and lyrics that reference elemental forces. What could easily slip into the background instead commands attention through its unusual rhythmic patterns and haunting vocal treatment.

The full album, due for release on 6 June 2025, promises to maintain this delicate balance between subtlety and engagement throughout its runtime. From the opening track ‘TAR,’ with its stoic vocals and propulsive drumming, to the more contemplative moments, the record navigates emotional territory that feels simultaneously familiar and alien.

‘Soul Divider’ demonstrates this quality with its trap-adjacent beat structure that creates a deceptively casual atmosphere whilst never allowing itself to fade completely into the background. Meanwhile, ‘Nature Hates Life’ ventures into shoegaze territory reminiscent of Justin K. Broadrick’s Pale Sketcher project, with dreamy guitars pierced by sharp electronics that demand the listener’s focus.

Other highlights include the hypnotic ‘Becomings,’ where pedal-effected guitars roll with the predictability and power of ocean waves, and the more overtly industrial ‘Closed Circuit.’ Throughout these diverse soundscapes, Sequence Of Events maintains a distinctive voice – one that exists in the liminal space between ambient background music and commanding foreground presence.

The creative approach behind The Art of Memory reflects the duo’s backgrounds in fine art. Working intuitively from a shared pool of samples, text fragments, and images, Saridas and Gottmanns have created music that functions like memories themselves – sometimes vivid, sometimes elusive, always affecting.

This album isn’t designed as escapism but rather as a meditation on sensory overload. In a musical landscape where so much becomes mere background noise for consumption, Sequence Of Events demands more from their listeners – offering sounds that refuse to be forgotten once experienced.
