Forever professional, Swedish industrial post-punk group, The Below, release their latest EP, Behaviour in Public Places. Accompanying the industrial metallics of their latest offering is a video for lead single ‘Tabla Motors’, created by Mike Coles (Killing Joke, The Orb, Shriekback).

Behaviour in Public Places draws on the now customary dark and threatening tones, reflecting the maturity and life experiences of the band members. Personal and societal challenges evidently flow through the veins of The Below’s music, resulting in a sound that is both introspective and haunting. Across the 5 tracks and near 20 minute runtime, the music evokes the spirits of mid-era Einstürzende Neubauten and the rawer moments of Nine Inch Nails, characterised by its experimental approach and relentless forays into existentialism.

Also featured on Behaviour in Public Places is the previously covered, ‘Heebie-Jeebies Süssigkeit‘.

A highlight of this release has to be the video clip for ‘Tabla Motors’. Created by Mike Coles, known for his work with the legendary Killing Joke, the video incorporates vintage cinema footage, including iconic scenes from Nosferatu. The significance of this connection to Killing Joke is not lost on The Below; they state: “Killing Joke is one of the most influential bands ever, and I have always loved their graphic profile. To be able to work with Mike Coles, who has done a lot of their artwork and videos, is a true honour.” The juxtaposition of dark imagery with the song’s intense soundscape creates a compelling narrative that invites viewers into the band’s unique world.

While feeling like less of a collaborator and more of a full-time member, Jesper Hanning’s contribution is marked by a unique blend of maturity and introspection, ultimately enriching the band’s dark and experimental sound. It increasingly feels like an invitation into the band rather than just a collaboration, allowing Hanning to integrate seamlessly into their creative process. Fans of late-era Swans, Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails, and Nick Cave will find much to appreciate in this haunting and thought-provoking music.

    Track list:
    1. ‘Tabla Motors’
    2. ‘Knives and Heights’
    3. ‘Hitobito (Only the Shadows)’
    4. ‘Heebie-Jeebies Süssigkeit’
