On Friday the 14th of June, discipline magazine was lucky enough to witness the triple onslaught that was THE OCEAN, CAVE IN and LLNN at 170 russell. The three bands came together for one night to play 3 sets of unbridled heavy post metal/hardcore.
LLNN
First up on the night was Denmark noise metallers LLNN. For those (however unlikely) to be unaware, LLNN has made a name for itself in the underground metal scene as an absolutely scathing noise ridden juggernaut of sound. If you talked to half the people at that show on the night they would tell you about how long they have been waiting to see LLNN and I can say now with total certainty last night would have paid off for most people. The band approached the stage with an unrivalled intensity for the evening, playing mostly songs from their most recent LP ‘Unmaker’ the band played for 30+ crushing minutes of absolute sludge terror.
Cave In
Cave in have been an absolute institution of hardcore/metal since until your heart stops came out in the late 90s. For those who have paid attention to cave ins output over the years. The band in its early phase was a colossal metallic hardcore band in the vein of old man gloom and Converge (likely due to sharing members with both bands).
However over time the band evolved into a more sophisticated heavy rock band. On display primarily were releases from the bands 2022 prog rock-esque release heavy pendulum. After the absolute assault of bleakness that was LLNN. A moment of reprieve was well welcome with the bands duelling guitar harmonies and thin lizzy-ish vocals generally going over great with the crowd.

The Ocean
Then finally came the ocean and fuck me, what a band this turned out to be. 5 piece french post metal/prog band the ocean came to prominence around.
I must admit when I was made aware of the ocean was well after the success of Pelagic so the ocean was generally never a major listen for me. But after seeing them on this night that has absolutely changed. On stage the band flawlessly took the audience across a span of the most lush and delicate style clean sounds, to the most captivating electronics and down to the absolute depths of their brand of complex post metal. The band played through a mix of releases from their latest album ‘holocene’ as well as a handful of fan favourites and over the span of 60+ minutes there was never a dull moment. To see the ocean is to honestly realise how on a whole other level they are. The show was an absolute triumph and a testament to the skills of this absolutely stunning live band .

All in all, getting to see any of these bands on their own would usually be a lucky evening but to witness all 3 of these legendary bands on the same bill is honestly a monumental thing to have happened, anyone who was there knows how lucky they were to witness this tour. If you ever get a chance to see any of these 3, absolutely make the effort to get there.
